Ranking G-20 Nations by CO2 Emissions

This example presents data relating to CO2 emissions by G-20 countries.

Rather than presenting absolute values, each graphic ranks the G-20 nations from 1 (the worst) to 19 (the twentieth member of the G-20 is the EU) for each given year according a specific CO2 emissions criterion: cumulative emissions since 1960 (top), annual emissions (middle) and annual emissions per capita (bottom).

On page load each graphic presents data in the form of a bumps chart. Clicking on the title of a chart will simplify the data to a slopegraph, presenting only the first and last ranking values for each country. (Thus the cumulative emissions graphic effectively compares emissions for 1960 with all emissions from 1960 onwards.) Click the title again to return to the bumps chart.

Because criss-crossing lines can be difficult to follow, there is also the option to highlight a country's line in a graphic by clicking on either of its labels. Click either label again to remove the highlighting. Multiple countries can be highlighted if desired.

This demonstration will not show correctly because your browser doesn't support inline svg. Please consider upgrading to one of the many that do.
